Frequently Asked
Agriculture insurance questions, answered.
What does farm and agriculture insurance typically cost?
Premium depends on acreage, gross farm income, payroll, equipment values, livestock counts, operation type (row-crop, dairy, orchard, beef, agritourism), state, and loss history. A 500-acre row-crop operation in Iowa prices very differently than a 50-cow dairy in Wisconsin or a 5-acre direct-market orchard in California. We build a real exposure profile before submitting, so the first quote is closer to the bound number — actual cost is subject to underwriting and policy terms.
What policies does a farm or agribusiness need?
A typical commercial-ag program includes Farm Liability, Workers Compensation, Farm Property (buildings, dwellings, contents), Inland Marine for equipment, Commercial Auto for farm trucks, Pollution Liability for chemical or manure exposure, and a Commercial Umbrella sized to the largest liability exposure. Specialty operations (CAFO, agritourism, dairy, equine) often need named-peril or specialty endorsements layered on. Coverage is subject to underwriting.
Is crop insurance the same as farm insurance?
No. Crop insurance — MPCI (Multi-Peril Crop Insurance), RP (Revenue Protection), and YP (Yield Protection) — is sold by approved insurance providers under the USDA Risk Management Agency program and covers yield or revenue loss to growing crops. Farm insurance (what we place) is the commercial property, liability, workers comp, and auto program that covers the rest of the operation. The two programs are usually placed separately. We do not currently sell MPCI/RP/YP through Delegance; we focus on the commercial side and refer customers to an RMA-approved provider for crop.
How do farm workers comp class codes affect my premium?
NCCI uses farm-specific class codes (0005 farm – livestock; 0006 farm – field crops; 0007 farm – dairy; 0008 farm – gardening and orchards) with rates that vary dramatically by state. Splitting payroll correctly between the farm class codes and clerical (8810) often moves premium 20-40 percent without changing anything about the operation. Misclassification on the original application is the most common reason ag premium gets re-rated mid-term or audited up at year-end.
Do I need pollution liability for chemicals and fertilizer?
Most general farm liability policies exclude pollution. If you spray, apply, store, or move chemicals, fertilizer, or manure at any scale — especially for custom application on neighbors’ fields or near surface water — pollution liability is generally needed to make the program complete. Carriers offer both occurrence-based and claims-made forms; the right choice depends on your operation. Eligibility and limits are subject to underwriting.
How fast can I get a Certificate of Insurance for a landowner or co-op?
Standard ACORD 25 certificates issue in seconds through the portal, ChatGPT, Claude, Slack, email, or phone. Custom holder language (additional insured, waiver of subrogation, primary and non-contributory) is typically produced within minutes after a licensed broker confirms the wording. There is no per-COI fee.
How does Delegance reduce broker commissions on farm programs?
Routine work — intake, COIs, endorsements, policy Q&A, renewal triage — runs through Orin, our insurance-specialized language model. Licensed brokers focus on judgment work like carrier selection, complex coverage analysis, and claim advocacy. Across the customer base we average a 60 percent reduction in broker commission cost versus a typical agricultural broker. That is an average, not a guarantee.
